An escape from the city

A couple of weekends ago, Peter and I visited Daylesford, the charming little town popular with Melbournians seeking refuge from the workweek. It was our first overnight escape from the city since we moved to Melbourne in 2022 and something we had been looking forward to doing for a while. And it was so worth it!

We had dinner at The Surly Goat, a restaurant with a magnificently simple focus on good quality, local ingredients where the menu comes preselected for you based on what’s in season and available around them. I imagine this is what dining at Alice Waters’ Chez Panisse might be like. We also had some phenomenal wine, and unfortunately not findable easily in wine stores, but hey, more reason to savour in the moment.

Organic tomatoes, peaches, whipped ricotta and vanilla. Yum!

We spent some time at Passing Clouds winery, tasting some exceptional wines, lounging in their garden surrounded by lavender and other fragrant herbs. Naturally, we bought some of what we sampled, adding to our pile of other goodies we picked up from the town, including plates made by a talented local artist and a blanket to our growing collection, crucial for Melbourne winters.

My highlight though, was the wonderful countryside sky, lit up by countless stars. The short trip was a gentle slowing down from a high octane week.
